The Basics About HBA:

Hellertown Borough Authority (HBA), founded in 1940, provides water and sewer service to the Borough of Hellertown and a portion of Lower Saucon Township. The authority serves 2,465 customers (65 of which are in Lower Saucon Township) with an average demand for water of 439,000 gallons per day. HBA employs five full-time maintenance employees and two full-time office employees.

HBA's water supply comes from a system of 16 springs located in Polk Valley. These springs are a continuous source and are augmented during peak usage periods by two wells on Durham Street and Division Street in Hellertown. All of these sources are considered to be groundwater sources and require only chlorine disinfection. The spring water is also treated with lime to reduce the acidity of the water. Sodium hypochlorite is used as a disinfectant for eight customers who are connected to the spring system prior to the main treatment location.

HBA's water system is a gravity-operated system with a 1 million gallon storage tank located on Apple Street and a 1 million gallon storage reservoir located off Reservoir Road at the opposite end of the system at the same elevation.

HBA is Dedicated to Protecting a Precious Resource:

HBA takes pride in our ability to provide a water supply of a very high quality, requiring very little treatment, at a very economical cost. A survey taken several years ago showed HBA's rate for water to be one of the lowest, if not the lowest, in the Lehigh Valley.

HBA's spring system is protected in its watershed area of approximately 600 acres of woodlands. We are currently in the process of redeveloping other springs which had been abandoned in the past.

A Touch of History:

The Authority's office building (pictured above) was deeded to HBA by the Borough in 1964 and renovated. The building is an old farmhouse built in 1832 and previously owned by five generations of the Rentzheimer family, one of the first German settlers in the area. When the building was renovated, every effort was made to preserve the original materials and designs, including wide hardwood plank floors with hand-cut nails, hand-wrought German lock door handles, and basement spring and a smokehouse. The building is registered as a historical building with the Hellertown Historical Society.
